NATURAL FAMILY PHOTOS IN NATURE
Exploring the World Together
A lighthearted family photo shoot in winter. It was a sunny, clear day in early February when I met up with this wonderful family at De Maasduinen National Park. The air was cool but crisp - just right for a little adventure in the heart of nature.
Without any stress or staged scenes, we used the evening to simply spend time together outdoors. The children were immediately in their element: they ran through the tall grass, let their kites dance in the wind, and curiously explored their surroundings. Especially cute was the little wooden camera, which allowed one of the children to become a photographer herself as she eagerly looked for interesting subjects to capture.
It wasn't a traditional family photo shoot, but rather a fun outing together, full of lightheartedness and joy. We balanced on tree trunks, laughed, marveled, and enjoyed this little break from our often hectic family life.
As the sun slowly sank lower in the sky, it bathed the dune landscape in a beautiful, golden light. Tired, happy, and with many special memories to take home, the family finally set off on their journey back.

ARE FAMILY PHOTOS IN WINTER A GOOD IDEA?
Definitely. Even though many families first think of warm summer evenings when they imagine a photo shoot, winter offers very special conditions for natural family photos.
On clear winter days, the light is often particularly soft and pleasant. Nature seems more peaceful, and many popular spots are much less crowded than during the warmer months. This results in relaxed photos without many onlookers or distractions in the background.
Another advantage: The sun is significantly lower in the sky during the day than it is in the summer. This means you can take family photos at sunset as early as the early evening, without having to keep young children awake for too long.
With warm sweaters, jackets, and a shared blanket, you can also capture photos that not only look natural but also convey a sense of warmth and comfort.

WHY THE BEST FAMILY PHOTOS ARE OFTEN TAKEN WHILE PLAYING
Before a family photo shoot, many parents worry about whether their children will sit still or look at the camera. The good news is: they don’t have to.
The most beautiful family photos often happen exactly when children are allowed to just be kids. When they’re running, exploring, climbing, or playing, genuine emotions and natural moments emerge that say so much more about your family than any perfectly posed shot.
That’s why my family photo shoots aren’t focused on posing, but on spending time together. Instead of giving rigid instructions, I offer gentle prompts and create space for genuine interactions.
This is how memories are created that, even years later, still feel just like the moment itself.
